Pruning done at the wrong time of year, or too hard in one go, can set a shrub back for a whole season. I prune trees, shrubs and bushes to encourage healthy growth and keep them the size and shape that suits the garden, timed to suit the plant rather than whenever it’s convenient.
This covers shaping ornamental shrubs and cutting back roses, through to thinning out shrubs that have grown into each other and taken over a border. Overgrown or misshapen bushes near paths, drives and windows are a common job, cut back to open up space without leaving bare, woody stumps.
Timing matters more than people expect. Spring-flowering shrubs get pruned just after they’ve flowered, not before, or you cut off next year’s blooms. Evergreens are better left until late summer. If you’re not sure what a plant needs, that’s part of what I’m there to work out.
Cuttings are cleared and removed as part of the job.
