Hedges left too long get harder to bring back, and an overgrown hedge is usually the first thing a neighbour mentions. I trim and shape hedges to whatever height and line suits the garden, working around gates, drives and boundary fences so the finished edge is straight and even.
Most hedges on the Isle of Wight need cutting once or twice a year depending on the variety. Fast-growing conifer and leylandii hedges, common on newer estates around Ryde, often need a second cut in late summer to stay tidy. Slower-growing beech and hawthorn hedges usually manage on one trim.
If a hedge has been left for a season or two, I can take it back gradually rather than cutting hard into old wood in one go, which gives it a better chance of growing back evenly.
